Information for new U6 and U7 players
Hurlstone Park Wanderers Small Sided Football for U6 and U7
Frequently asked questions (and some that you might not have thought of)
At Hurlstone Park Wanderers our u6 and u7 players play in intra-club football – so all the players are from HPW and we play the games at the same time and place each Saturday. The focus is on building friendship, team work and ball skills.
Our teams in these age groups are organised in “houses” with each team having two or more house leaders who organise the teams and training. We try to arrange the houses around your preferences in terms of playing with friends as far as is possible.
What Age Group is my child in?
Your child’s age group is based on the age they were ‘under’ on January 1 this year. So a child who turned 7 in December 2019 would register as an Under 8 (because they were 7 on January 1, 2020), while a child who turned 7 in February this year is an Under 7, as they were still 6 on January 1 2020. This can be confusing, as both children will in fact be 7 for the whole playing season. This means children can have friends in the same year at school who turn out to be in different age groups. Please contact me if this is an issue for you with your child’s friends- we can allow younger children to ‘play up’ an age group (but cannot allow older kids to ‘play down’). The registration system will only offer you registration packages for which your child is age-eligible, so decisions about playing up an age group are made after registration.
What is the youngest age at which children can play?
The youngest age group at Hurlstone Park is Under 6. To play in under 6, your child must be less than 6 years old on Jan 1, 2020, and MUST AT LEAST TURN FIVE DURING THIS CALENDAR YEAR. In other words, 4 year olds can play in Under 6s as long as they turn 5 this year.
Are there all-girls’ teams at Hurlstone Park?
All of our U6 and U7 squads are mixed gender. At U8 girls can choose whether to continue to play in mixed teams or can join an all-girls team. From U13, there are no longer mixed teams, and all players must play in boys’ or girls’ teams.
When and where do we play?
U6 and U7 all play at Ewen Park, Tennent Parade, Hurlstone Park on Saturday Mornings. Normally U6s will kick off at 8.30 and U7s at 9.15. The season will run from early April to late August.
We plan to play when it is raining (it’s a winter sport!), although sometimes we need to close the field for safety reasons if the surface is unplayable. ASSUME THAT YOU ARE PLAYING UNLESS YOU HEAR FROM THE CLUB THAT YOU ARE NOT.
Do we play during the school holidays?
Normally yes. Because we cannot replay washed out games, the best way to ensure that you have the most value for money is to schedule games every weekend except the Easter Weekend. In some years there are very few weekends washed out, and we might ask parents if you want to break over the holidays- people can be grateful for a football free weekend!
When will my child have training? Training for U6 this year will be from 5-6pm on Thursday evenings at Ewen Park. Under 7s will train on Tuesdays, also from 5-6 pm at Ewen Park. It is an expectation that a parent or another adult that your child knows is present at the ground throughout training.
Is there grading for these age groups?
No. In these age groups it is important that children play for fun and learn to support and respect their teammates regardless of individual skills. There will be grading when the U7s move into U8s, so later in your season in U7, there might be discussions about your child’s plans for U8s.
How do I register my child?
Registration can be completed online via this link https://hurlstoneparkwanderers.com.au/registrations-for-2020-are-now-open/
If your child is new to the club, we will need to see evidence of their age before the season starts- this is usually a scanned image of their passport or birth certificate.
You can either email this to me, or bring it along to training before the season starts.
How do I obtain the $100 rebate available through the NSW government Active Kids Program?
The program is a NSW State Government initiative available through the Service NSW website at: https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/apply-active-kids-voucher
If you are planning to us an Active Kids Voucher for the registration, please make sure that you have the voucher number available before you begin registration, as we cannot apply the voucher code after you have registered.
Who should I contact in the club if I am having difficulties with registration?
In the first instance it is best to contact the club Registrar (who also happens to be me) using the email address
While I’m happy to talk on the phone, I’d prefer if you could email first so that I can have any information I need in front of me when we talk, or if necessary forward your enquiry to another person, eg the club Treasurer.
Welcome to Hurlstone Park Wanderers, and have a terrific 2020 season, and I look forward to meeting you!!
Steve Cumming (U6 and U7 Age Coordinator).
