Grading F.A.Q
The purpose of grading is to ensure when we submit teams into the Canterbury competition, they are playing with peers of similar ability to other teams in the association.
U9 note – U9 (Mixed) is the first year we grade players at Hurlstone Park Wanderers. For this reason, additional notes have been provided where relevant.
Does my child need to grade?
Grading is not compulsory. It is really only for those who wish to be considered for the higher division teams (eg. Division 1).
U9 note – In U9s, we typically grade our top 3 teams. Because it is our first year in the competition (where other Clubs elect to do this in U8s), we typically request to enter the top graded team into Division 2,
Do I need to attend both sessions?
If your age group specifies 2 grading sessions, it is strongly advised that you attend both sessions. In some age groups, a second session may be required. You will be notified if this is the case.
U9 note – attendance at both grading sessions is strongly advised. If you can only make 1 session, the first session is preferable.
What if I can’t make it to a grading session?
Please notify the Coaching Coordinator and your relevant Age Coordinator if you wish to attend a grading session but are unable. Contact details below.
If my child does not want to grade, what are my options?
Hurlstone Park Wanderers is all about providing the opportunity for all to play football. If you DO NOT wish to be considered for grading, you can do the following:
- Participate in a friendship team. If there are friends who wish to play together, please notify your Age Coordinator with as much detail as possible and we will do our best to accommodate the request.
- Do nothing. You Age Coordinator will automatically place you in a team and you will be notified on placement.

When is grading on?
All information about Grading is located at http://hurlstoneparkwanderers.com.au/players/grading/
Do you have a Div 1 team?
We do not have Division 1 teams in every age group. Contact the relevant Age Coordinator for more information.
U9 note – In U9s, we typically enter our highest graded team into Division 2. There is a re-grading opportunity where results are reviewed midway into the season should the team be more suited to Division 1.
When will I know the results of the grading?
Results are typically communicated by your Age Coordinator, up to 2-3 weeks after the final grading session, if not earlier.
Who runs the grading sessions?
For U9 -12 (mixed/boys), we use an independent body to run the grading sessions. For the Girls (U11-14), Mixed/Boys (U13-16), BBC and GMT, the HPW Grading Sub-Committee will run the grading sessions in association with coaches and experienced players within the Club.
What happens in a grading session?
Grading typically consists of a skills-based session plus a small-sided game.
What information is considered in the grading of teams?
We realise that performance at a grading session is not always indicative of player ability. For that reason, all information available including player history and coach feedback is taken into consideration.
